This cat water intake calculator gives a rough range for the water your cat takes in a day, then subtracts what its wet or dry food already holds, so you can see what is left for the bowl or fountain. It is a guide to what is typical, never an amount to push on a cat, and everything stays in your browser.

Without JavaScript, work it out by hand: multiply the weight in kilograms by 44 and by 66 for Merck’s range in mL a day, then subtract the grams of wet food times its moisture percent.
What to buy for this answer

- All sources: the weight in kilograms times 44 and times 66, the Merck Veterinary Manual’s range in mL for most mammals in a comfortable temperature.
- From food: the grams of wet food a day times the moisture on its label, plus the same for dry food if you add it.
- To drink: the first figure minus the second, never below zero, shown in mL, fluid ounces and cups, and for all your cats together.
Merck’s figure covers mammals in general rather than cats alone, and none of the cat sources we saved gives a cat-only number, so treat the range as rough. The amount a cat needs shifts with its diet, its surroundings, how active it is and its health.
How much water should a cat drink?
Less than many owners expect when the food is wet. Merck puts canned pet foods at 60 to over 87 percent moisture and dry foods at 3 to 11 percent, and notes that cats eating mostly canned food generally drink less than cats on dry. Cornell’s Feline Health Center gives wet cat food as about 70 to 80 percent water. The label’s guaranteed analysis lists the moisture for your own food.
The answer is not a target. Merck says healthy animals given plenty of water regulate their own intake and that water should generally not be restricted, so keep clean water out at all times and let your cat decide. It also says several water sources encourage drinking, which in a small home can mean a second bowl in another room.
Vet note. Watch for change more than for a number. A cat that starts drinking much more than usual needs a vet: the AAFP’s 2021 senior care guidelines list increased thirst among the signs of kidney disease and of an overactive thyroid. Drinking much less, or a cat that stops eating, needs a call too.
Fountain or bowl
Three small studies found no significant difference overall between a fountain or flowing water and a still bowl, though some cats in them preferred one or the other. A fountain is a choice for your cat and your space, not a way to raise intake. If you pick one, the tank size decides how often you refill it, which is what the cards above show, and our cordless fountain guide compares filters, batteries and footprints.
Cat water questions
What is a normal amount of water for a cat to drink a day?
There is no single normal figure. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives about 44 to 66 mL per kilogram of body weight for most mammals, counting every source, and much of that can come from wet food. What matters most is your own cat’s usual pattern: a clear change in either direction is a reason to see a vet.
How much water does a 12 pound cat need?
By Merck’s general range, a 12 lb cat (about 5.4 kg) takes in about 240 to 360 mL in all, roughly 8 to 12 fluid ounces, from food and bowl together. On a mostly wet diet, much of that comes from the food. Enter your cat’s food above to see the part left for drinking.
How many ounces of water should a 10 lb cat drink?
All sources together come to about 200 to 300 mL, close to 7 to 10 fluid ounces, by Merck’s figure for most mammals. A cat on dry food drinks most of that from the bowl; a cat on wet food may drink far less, which is normal. Treat it as a rough range, never a quota.
Is it normal for a cat on wet food to drink very little?
Often, yes. Wet food is mostly water, and in Merck’s words a mainly canned diet usually goes with less drinking. Add the cans and the label’s moisture above to see how much the food already covers. What needs a vet is a change: a cat that suddenly drinks much more, or much less, than before.
How much water do indoor cats drink?
We found no source with a separate figure for indoor cats, so the calculator uses the same general range. Merck notes that the need changes with surroundings and activity, so a warm apartment or a busy young cat may take in more. Keep fresh water available in more than one spot and follow your own cat’s habits.
