This cat age calculator turns your cat’s years and months into human years with the chart International Cat Care publishes, and names the life stage your cat is in by the AAHA and AAFP’s 2021 guidelines, with what vets focus on at that stage. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

How the cat age calculator works

International Cat Care counts a cat’s first two years as 24 human years and adds 4 for every year after, so a 7-year-old cat matches a person of 44. For kittens it lists months one by one: 6 months matches 10 human years, 12 months matches 15. Where its table skips a month, the calculator shows the ages on either side rather than guessing between them.

The life stage comes from the 2021 AAHA and AAFP guidelines: kittens up to a year, young adults from 1 to 6, mature adults from 7 to 10 and seniors over 10. iCatCare uses six stages of its own, from kitten to super senior, and the calculator shows both. The guidelines themselves call any such grouping an arbitrary line along a spectrum, because cats and their body systems age at different rates.

What changes at each life stage

  • Kitten: vaccines and parasite control, early socialization, spaying or neutering and food for growth.
  • Young adult: boosters and regular wellness exams, an ideal weight and dental care.
  • Mature adult: screening for age-related problems such as kidney disease and dental trouble.
  • Senior: early detection through regular screening; the AAFP stresses more than one exam a year.

Vet note. In an older cat, stiffness, a new reluctance to jump, or a change in appetite or thirst calls for a vet visit rather than being put down to age. The AAFP adds that some cats are better cared for as seniors from about 8.

Cat age questions

How do you convert cat years to human years?

By International Cat Care’s chart, the first year of a cat’s life equals about 15 human years and the second brings it to 24. After that, each cat year adds 4 human years, so a 10-year-old cat matches a person of 56. The calculator above applies the same chart, months included.

How old is a cat in human years?

Enter its age in years and months above. A 5-year-old cat, for example, is about 36 in human years by iCatCare’s chart, a young adult in the AAHA and AAFP guidelines. If you do not know the birthday, ask your vet for an estimate and use that as your starting point.

Is 12 years old considered old for a cat?

It counts as senior. The 2021 AAHA and AAFP guidelines call cats over 10 seniors, iCatCare’s senior stage runs from 11 to 14, and its chart puts a 12-year-old cat at about 64 human years. Many cats live well beyond that, so senior means more frequent checkups, not the end.

When is a cat considered a senior?

Over 10 years old, by the AAHA and AAFP’s 2021 classification. The AAFP’s senior care guidelines add that some cats may be better treated as seniors from about 8, depending on breed and health. Either way, the change worth acting on is more frequent veterinary exams.

How long do cats live?

International Cat Care puts the average at around 12 to 14 years, and notes that it is not unusual for a cat to reach its late teens or even its twenties. Its chart runs to 25 cat years, which it matches to 116 human years, and the calculator follows its rule beyond that.
