The space-fit planner answers one question before you order anything: will it fit on that floor? Give it the spot you have in mind and the footprint of each item from its listing, and it finds a layout, draws it to scale and flags a litter box that is too short for your cat.
Apartment Cats earns a commission when you buy through the Amazon links on this page, at no cost to you. Picks are made on published specs, never on commission. How this works
The planner needs JavaScript to run. Without it, multiply the width by the depth of the spot and of each item, and compare the totals; then check the litter box against 1.5 times your cat’s length.
What to buy for this layout
Cards follow the items in your plan; every one comes from a guide we have published. Litter boxes are marked against 1.5 times your cat.

It lines items up in rows along the wall, the way most people push furniture into a corner, and turns each one either way to find a fit. It tries a few orders, largest first among them, and draws the first layout where everything lands inside the spot. When nothing works, it tells you whether the floor area is short or only the shapes are wrong, and draws the closest attempt.
Treat a green result as a first pass, not a promise. The planner sees rectangles. It does not know where a door swings, how far a baseboard sticks out, or that a cat needs room in front of a box entry to turn around, and no source we found gives a number for that last one. Leave a margin, and measure the real spot at floor level.
The two guideline checks
- Litter box length. Each box is held against 1.5 times your cat’s nose-to-tail-base length, the AAFP and ISFM minimum. AAHA measures to the tail tip, which asks for more.
- Food and water in the same spot. If a box shares the spot with a feeder, fountain or bowls, the planner warns you. Veterinary guidelines keep them apart but set no distance.
It also points out two boxes placed side by side, because the AAFP and ISFM count those as one box, not two.
About the example values
The planner opens with an example so the drawing has something to show. The litter box, 19.5 x 15.25 in (50 x 39 cm), is the size the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior gives for a common covered box sold as “large”. Against an 18 in (46 cm) cat it comes up 7.5 in (19 cm) short of the 27 in (69 cm) minimum. The spot, the cat tree and the cat are invented round numbers; type over all of them.
