An automatic cat feeder for a small apartment has two jobs before it has any others: fit the spot you can spare, and keep serving when the power, the Wi-Fi or the kibble lets it down. So measure first, then compare battery backup, buttons against an app, the kibble size each maker accepts and which parts you can wash.

Best automatic cat feeder for a small apartment, on the makers’ specs
For one cat, our pick is the PETLIBRO Granary 3L (PLAF005). PETLIBRO’s manual gives it a 7.5 in square base (19 cm), the smallest footprint any maker here publishes, and you program it from buttons, so a dead router changes nothing. Its maker also documents the most: run time on batteries alone, the widest kibble range here, an outlet sensor and a dishwasher-safe bowl.

Key takeaways
- Most bases here measure 7 to 7.5 in (18 to 19 cm) a side, so height, room above for top refills and space in front decide the spot. → footprint and height
- Only PETLIBRO gives battery life: 30 to 60 days for the Granary 3L, 7 days for the Smart Feeder, whose Wi-Fi then shuts off. → power and batteries
- Kibble ranges differ by maker and the IMIPAW publishes none, so measure one piece across its widest side before buying. → kibble size
- Amounts come from the food label and your vet, not the feeder’s default; vets also differ on meal count, so ask yours. → meals and portions
- Feeders cannot tell whether food was eaten; if your cat eats less, has diabetes or is on a prescription diet, ask your vet first. → the vet note

Like most automatic pet feeders for cats, all five are timed, dry-food models also sold for small dogs. For canned meals, read automatic cat feeders for wet food, where ice packs and cooling set the limits. Three listings near the top of Amazon’s results are left out: we found no maker’s page to check them against.
Footprint and height: measure the spot, then the space above it
A timed feeder is a tower: a hopper on a motor base, a bowl at the front. Bases here run about 7 to 7.5 in (18 to 19 cm) square, so floor area rarely rules one out; height, overhangs and the space in front do. The PetSafe FlexFeed is the outlier. PetSafe publishes no dimensions, and its Amazon listing gives 12.5 x 7.3 in (32 x 19 cm), about 60% more floor than the Granary.

Above the spot you need the feeder’s height plus room for a hand and the food bag, since every hopper here fills from the top. Under a shelf or a low cabinet, that decides it.
In front, your cat eats with its head over the bowl and its body behind it, so a gap that holds the machine may not hold the cat. Try the slot beside the fridge or the corner behind the bathroom door in the space-fit planner, which draws a feeder to scale and flags a spot shared with the litter box.
Small automatic cat feeders: footprint against hopper size
When floor is the limit, compare what each base carries. The IMIPAW 3L has the smallest published footprint of the five, 7 in (17.8 cm) square by its listing, about 49 sq in (317 cm²), and still holds 3 L. Both PETLIBRO Granary models stand on a 7.5 in (19 cm) square, about 56 sq in (363 cm²), so the 5 L Smart Feeder carries two liters more than the 3L on the same floor and pays for it with 2.4 in (6 cm) of height. The VOLUAS sits between them: 4 L on 7.4 in (18.8 cm) square.
The FlexFeed runs the other way, with the smallest hopper here, 2 L, on the widest base, about 91 sq in (588 cm²) by its listing. A small automatic cat feeder for a counter or a shelf is one of the square towers; measure the cabinet above it before you choose the taller one.
Hopper capacity: what the liters on the box mean
Makers state capacity in liters, a few with cups beside it: 2 L (8 cups) for the FlexFeed, 3 L for the Granary and the IMIPAW, 4 L (16.9 cups) for the VOLUAS and 5 L for the Smart Feeder. That is the container, not your cat’s supply.
Several listings print how many days a full hopper lasts. Those numbers assume a cat, a food and a portion that may not be yours, so we leave them out. The makers’ upkeep clocks say more: PETLIBRO wants a fresh desiccant packet every 15 days, VOLUAS every 15 days in its manual but every 4 weeks on its product page, PetSafe a new food-saver pouch every 30, and each of their cleaning routines includes emptying the hopper.
Bigger also means taller. On the same base, the 5 L Smart Feeder stands 13.4 in (34 cm) against 11 in (28 cm) for the 3L, and PETLIBRO wants the 3L kept above a marked minimum line anyway, since portions come out uneven below it.
Power: the plug, the batteries and a power cut
Every feeder here plugs into a small adapter (5 V, or USB on the PetSafe) and takes three alkaline D batteries as backup. Only PETLIBRO says how long those batteries last:
- Granary 3L: 30 to 60 days on batteries alone, by PETLIBRO’s help center chart; its pre-sale page says about 60.
- Granary Smart Feeder: 7 days. On batteries its Wi-Fi, record and reset buttons switch off, though scheduled meals still run.
- VOLUAS, IMIPAW and PetSafe: no duration given.
So the feeder you buy for its phone alerts goes offline in a power cut, the moment you would most want an alert, and it lasts a fraction as long on the same three cells.
PETLIBRO wants both Granary models plugged in day to day, with batteries kept for emergencies, because tired cells give unstable voltage. Its manual adds: alkaline only, never rechargeable, and fresh batteries before a long absence. VOLUAS also asks for daily use on the cable, and after an outage or a battery swap it says to check the clock and the schedule. Older buildings rarely put an outlet where you want one, and the Granary 3L’s USB-C cable runs about 4.9 ft (1.5 m).
Mind the cable. PETLIBRO’s manual says not to let pets chew any part of the feeder and suggests a hard-plastic cord conduit from a hardware store if the cable worries you. VOLUAS asks for the cable to stay out of walkways and away from pets that chew. Run it along the wall behind the feeder rather than across the floor in front of it, and keep the battery door shut.
Wi-Fi and an app, or buttons on the feeder
Four of the five program from buttons and a small screen. Only the Smart Feeder needs an app and home Wi-Fi, on 2.4 or 5 GHz, and in return it alerts your phone to low food, a jam or a low battery.
For renters there is one catch. PETLIBRO’s help center allows a Wi-Fi password of up to 58 characters with no special symbols, so a building router whose password is full of symbols you cannot change may keep the feeder offline.
Button feeders have their own trap, a 12-hour clock. The Granary 3L, the FlexFeed and the IMIPAW all use one, and PetSafe’s guide says to check AM and PM as you set the time; a breakfast set for 7 PM looks normal on the display. PetSafe ships the FlexFeed locked “to prevent your pet from pressing buttons to dispense extra food,” and the Granary 3L and the VOLUAS have lock buttons too.
Kibble size and jams
Measure one piece of your cat’s food across its widest side before you buy. The ranges differ more than the listings suggest:
- Both PETLIBRO Granary models: 0.08 to 0.6 in (2 to 15 mm).
- VOLUAS 4L: 0.08 to 0.39 in (2 to 10 mm), the narrowest top end here, so measure large kibble twice.
- PetSafe FlexFeed: 1/4 to 1/2 in (5 to 12 mm). Its lower limit is the highest here, so very small kibble is out.
- IMIPAW: none published.

Jam prevention is described, never measured. The Granary 3L has an anti-clog detector at the outlet and flashes “E1” when food sticks, while the Smart Feeder sends a pop-up to the app. The FlexFeed lights red and shows E004 for a chute error. IMIPAW says its outlet is angled so food does not collect there, and VOLUAS describes no sensor at all. All five take dry food only.
PETLIBRO’s manual also says to check often that the feeder is dispensing properly. A sensor can tell you the outlet is blocked. It cannot tell you the cat ate.
Cleaning: which parts can go in the dishwasher
In all five the base holds the electronics and gets wiped, never rinsed. The rest varies:
| Feeder | Dishwasher, maker’s words | By hand | Drying packet |
|---|---|---|---|
| PETLIBRO Granary 3L | Only the stainless steel bowl | Lid, tank, tank base, bowl holder | Every 15 days |
| PETLIBRO Granary Smart | Not stated | Bowls remove | Every 2 weeks |
| VOLUAS 4L | “Do not use a dishwasher,” bowl included | Tank, lid, steel bowl | Every 15 days |
| IMIPAW 3L | Not stated | Food tray removes | Bag included |
| PetSafe FlexFeed | Stainless steel bowl | Lid, hopper, chute cover, food tray | Pouch every 30 days |
No dishwasher in your rental? Then check how far each feeder comes apart. PetSafe’s chute cover twists off the hopper, and the Granary 3L’s tank base twists out, which is where PETLIBRO sends you when food will not come out. Dry everything before refilling: PetSafe warns that kibble sticks to damp parts and can jam.
Noise and the meal call in a studio
No maker in this list publishes a sound level for its motor, so we cannot rank them for noise. In a studio the feeder shares a room with your bed, and the sound you control is the recorded meal call. Four of the five can play one. PETLIBRO says the Smart Feeder’s volume can be turned down; on the rest, record nothing or set the first meal after your alarm.
Where the feeder goes: away from water and litter
Feline guidelines from the AAFP and ISFM separate food from water and put the litter box far from both, though none gives a distance. In a one-room apartment that usually means the feeder in a kitchen corner, water on another wall and the box in the bathroom. The AAFP’s 2018 feeding statement adds that cats prefer to eat alone, so a low-traffic corner beats the path to the front door.

Water tends to land beside the feeder because that is where the outlet is. A battery fountain avoids that, and our guide to cordless cat water fountains compares five.
Meals and portions: the food label and your vet decide
This page gives no amounts, and a feeder’s default setting is no guide either. How much your cat eats comes from the food label and your vet. A portion is a machine setting rather than a weight; VOLUAS suggests weighing a few dispensed portions of your own kibble to see what one holds. Once you have the label’s kcal per cup, the cat food calculator turns a starting range for your cat into portions per meal for these feeders, to check with your vet.
How many meals is where feline vets differ. The AAFP’s 2018 statement favors several small meals spread over 24 hours, while Cornell’s Feline Health Center is content with once or twice a day for most adult cats. A timed feeder can follow either plan: up to 4 meals a day on the VOLUAS, 6 on the Granary 3L, 8 on the PetSafe and 10 on the Smart Feeder by its spec table (an answer lower on the same PETLIBRO page says 6). Ask your vet which pattern fits, then set the machine to it.
What an automatic cat feeder cannot do
It cannot make a cat hunt. In the AAFP’s words, automatic feeders “can also be helpful” but “do not typically provide for foraging and predation,” which puzzle feeders and hidden kibble do. A feeder drops food in a bowl; a puzzle makes the cat work for it. Our comparison of puzzle feeders for cats covers which types suit a small floor.
Nor does it replace a visit. No veterinary body we found sets a number of hours or days a healthy adult cat may be left alone. Cats Protection, a UK charity, wants a sitter to call in at least twice a day when you travel, and VOLUAS’s own manual says to arrange for someone to check your pet before a long absence. Then read our guide to time alone, print the weekend-away checklist and price a sitter against gear in the weekend cost calculator.
Vet note. A feeder serves on schedule and has no idea whether the food was eaten. If your cat has been eating less, is on a prescription diet or has diabetes, talk to your vet before you hand its meals to a machine, and keep checking the bowl yourself. The AAFP’s 2018 feeding statement puts that check on owners: make sure the cat is actually eating.
Who should skip each one
Each of the five has a reader it does not suit:
- PETLIBRO Granary 3L: skip it if you want alerts away from home or feed kibble over 0.6 in (1.5 cm).
- PetSafe FlexFeed: skip it for very small kibble, under 1/4 in, or if you need the maker’s dimensions before buying.
- PETLIBRO Granary Smart Feeder 5L: skip it for a spot under a low shelf, a router password you cannot change, or backup beyond a week.
- VOLUAS Automatic Feeder 4L: skip it if anything must go in the dishwasher, or you need more than 4 meals a day or kibble over 0.39 in (10 mm).
- IMIPAW 3L: skip it if you want the maker’s word on size, kibble range or cleaning. Its product page gives none of the three.
How these feeders were chosen
Documentation set the bar for this list: a feeder needed a maker’s own page to check. Faroro’s PF21SB, Yuposl’s YPF03-PW00 and the ANDOLL HOME FT-3S failed that test, and the PETLIBRO Air went when its page returned an error and Amazon showed it unavailable. For the five survivors, the table lines up base size and height, battery backup, buttons versus app, kibble range and washable parts. Battery life comes from PETLIBRO alone, motor noise is unpublished, and IMIPAW prints no kibble range.
Questions about automatic cat feeders
Is an automatic cat feeder a good idea?
Often, for long workdays or a cat that wakes you at 5 a.m., as long as a person still checks the bowl. The machine keeps time; it does not keep watch. Choose battery backup and buttons that work without Wi-Fi, then run it at home for a few days first.
Do vets recommend automatic cat feeders?
Feline vets list them as one tool among several. The AAFP and ISFM name timed feeders, beside puzzle feeders, as a way to offer small, frequent meals, and the AAFP’s 2018 statement calls automatic feeders helpful while noting they skip the foraging. Portions stay with your own vet.
Can you leave a cat alone for 2 days with an automatic feeder?
The veterinary sources we read set no safe number of days, so a feeder cannot settle it. Cats Protection, the UK charity, suggests someone visit at least twice daily while you are away. A feeder covers meals between visits; it cannot clear a jam or notice a cat that stopped eating.
Can two cats share an automatic feeder?
Two cats can share one, but the AAFP notes that cats prefer to eat alone, and a single timed feeder cannot tell which cat took the meal. Separate feeding spots suit most pairs better. Dual-bowl and microchip feeders exist for this; the feeder types page explains how each works.
Can a cat feeder sit on a kitchen counter?
VOLUAS, answering owners whose pets knock feeders over, says to keep its feeder on a flat, stable floor away from edges or counters, and PETLIBRO’s manual limits its feeder to pets that can reach the food tray. IMIPAW and PetSafe say nothing on it. Most bases here need only about 7 in (18 cm) of floor each way.
What if no outlet is near the feeder?
Batteries can bridge the gap, not replace the plug. VOLUAS reserves them for outages or a spot without an outlet and recommends the cable day to day, while PETLIBRO wants its Granary models plugged in because weak cells give unsteady voltage. So move the spot, or run the cable along the wall.
Is a cat food dispenser the same as an automatic feeder?
Not always. A gravity dispenser refills the bowl as your cat eats and portions nothing, while a timed feeder drops a set number of portions at set times. Listings use both names for both kinds, so for timed meals, look for a clock and a meal schedule in the specs.
Next step. Set the portions your feeder will serve from the food label with the cat food calculator.
