7-day enrichment plan builder with toy rotation cards

By Claire HollisUpdated Specs checked Oct 16, 2026Researched, not tested
A cream cat peeks out of a fabric play tunnel on a rug, with a felt ball and a scratcher on a bench.

Tick the toys you own, pick your cat’s stage and how many sessions a day you can manage, and the builder lays out a week of play with a cat toy rotation built in. Each session is shaped like a hunt, and the plan and its rotation cards print on one sheet for the fridge.

Apartment Cats earns a commission when you buy through the Amazon links on this page, at no cost to you. Picks are made on published specs, never on commission. How this works

The plan builder needs JavaScript to run. Without it, the short version: play two or three times daily for 10 to 15 minutes, end each game with a catch and then food, and swap a few toys out of a drawer every week.

What to buy for the toys you ticked

Picks from our published guides for the toys that have them: food puzzles and window perches for now.

How the plan and the cat toy rotation are built

AAHA, VCA Animal Hospitals and the San Francisco SPCA all land on the same range: two or three short sessions daily, 10 to 15 minutes apiece. It is expert advice rather than a trial result, and International Cat Care adds that cats are sprinters, so even one minute of hard play counts. The builder lets you pick 2 or 3 sessions and 10 or 15 minutes.

  • Every session copies a hunt: stalk, chase, pounce, a real catch, then a treat or the next meal (AAFP and ISFM; AAHA).
  • Laser games end on a toy the cat can grab, as International Cat Care advises.
  • Toys take turns. The AAFP and ISFM suggest rotating them; VCA suggests four or five out at a time, swapped weekly. Tick six or more and the builder keeps four out.
  • Food puzzles start as easy as a bowl and sit beside the usual dish (Dantas and others, 2016). The plan never says how much to feed.

Catnip shows up twice a week at most. The ASPCA lists it as toxic to cats when eaten, with mild signs, so the plan keeps it a small, occasional treat, and for kittens it waits: International Cat Care notes that most do not react to it before about three months.

The drawer rule. Wand toys and anything with string, ribbon or elastic go back in a closed drawer when the session ends. Swallowed line is an emergency, and VCA Animal Hospitals advises never leaving a cat alone with these toys.

Printing the plan

The print button sends only the week and the three cards to the printer, not the rest of this page. Cut the cards apart if you like: one lists this week’s toys, one the drawer, and one the four steps of every session. Nothing you tick is saved or sent anywhere; reload the page and it starts fresh.
