The types of cat litter sold in the US today are clumping clay, silica crystals, pine, walnut shell, corn, wheat, grass seed, recycled paper and tofu. The plant and paper ones get a closer look in our eco-friendly cat litters compared guide. To a cat, feel and smell count for more than the material, and the veterinary guidelines agree on what most cats want: a fine, unscented litter that clumps.
In a small apartment, what separates them for you is the weight you haul home and the dust in a room you also sleep in. We read each maker’s product page for ten bags, one or two per type. Every dust figure below is the maker’s claim, and none of the ten pages says how it was measured.

Which type of cat litter to choose
Our pick for most small apartments: Cat’s Pride Max Power Unscented. It is unscented clumping clay, the material cats used most in a 2025 study of three clumping litters, and its maker lists it as 25% lighter than traditional scoopable clay. That is Cat’s Pride’s comparison, not our weighing. Up four flights of stairs, it is still the claim that counts.

Key takeaways
- Read the dust column as claims: every percentage there is the maker’s own, and three of the ten litters give no figure. → the comparison table
- Fine and sand-like, unscented and clumping: that is the litter most cats want, by the AAFP and ISFM, Cornell and iCatCare. → what cats prefer
- Need a lighter bag? Grass seed’s maker puts it at half the weight of traditional clay, and admits litter this light tracks. → grass seed litter
- Paper pellets do not clump, and for non-clumping litter San Diego Humane Society wants the whole box changed every 2 to 3 days. → paper litter
- Pour less to carry less: depth matters more than brand to the total, and Cornell finds most cats like roughly 1 to 2 in (2.5 to 5.1 cm). → weight and depth

What cats prefer, whatever the bag says
The AAFP and ISFM house-soiling guidelines put it plainly: “Cat litter is marketed to people, not to cats.” What the cat wants, by those guidelines, Cornell’s Feline Health Center and the 2025 iCatCare consensus, is fine, sand-like, unscented litter that clumps. The authors of a 2025 cat cafe study, summing up earlier work, add that cats dislike large gravel or pellet shapes. In their own trial clay beat wood and paper, though the company that made all three employs the lead author. Our overview of what vets and studies say about litter has the counts.

Scent is where labels and cats part ways. Cornell says most cats prefer unscented litter, and Horwitz’s retrospective study, which the 2025 paper cites, linked scented litter with significantly more soiling outside the box. San Diego Humane Society draws a finer line: many cats tolerate mild odor control such as baking soda, fewer tolerate added fragrance, and natural litters smell of themselves. Open the bag and sniff before the first pour.
Clumping clay and bentonite cat litter
San Diego Humane Society calls clay the most common litter, and it has the most evidence behind it. Dr. Elsey’s Amazon listing for Clean Tracks names the clay, 100% bentonite, chosen for clumping. The maker’s page calls it a medium grain, low tracking clay with no added perfumes or deodorants, gives no dust figure, and asks for 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) of litter and scooping twice a day. Twice a day matches the iCatCare ideal. The depth is double Cornell’s.
Cat’s Pride Max Power Unscented is a dual-clay blend listed by its maker as 99% dust free and 25% lighter than standard scoopable clay. Its page promises 10 days of odor control in one paragraph and 14 in another; the routine in our guide to keeping a litter box from smelling matters more than either. Skip clay if nobody at home can carry 15 to 18 lb up your stairs.
Silica crystal litter
Crystals absorb urine instead of clumping around it: scoop the solids, stir, and dump the box when the crystals are spent. PetSafe ScoopFree Premium Crystal Litter comes as two 4.3 lb bags, listed as 99% dust free, and PetSafe says one bag lasts up to 30 days for one cat.
Two things count against it. PetSafe calls this litter lightly scented. And San Diego Humane Society, which groups crystals with the non-clumping litters, wants the whole box emptied every 2 to 3 days, not monthly. Skip silica if your cat avoids scented litter.
Pine litter
Small Pet Select Pelleted Pine Cat Litter is virgin pine pressed into dense pellets with no chemicals, fillers or additives, by the maker’s account. It does not clump. The maker says the pellets turn to sawdust as they absorb, and the Amazon listing pitches them for sifting boxes. The page calls the litter super low dust and leaves odor to the wood’s own smell.
Pellets sit about as far from fine sand as litter gets, and the preference evidence points away from them. Skip pine for a cat raised on clay, or if anyone at home dislikes the smell of fresh-cut wood.
Walnut shell litter
Naturally Fresh makes its Quick-Clumping litter from walnut shells. Clumps form in as little as 15 minutes, the page says, and an independent study it does not name found the litter absorbs ammonia odors three times better than the leading clay. There is no dust figure and no word on fragrance for this formula, though the range includes a litter scented with essential oils.
Directions call for about 3 in (7.6 cm) and promise 30 days or more between full changes with one cat. Guidelines run shorter: every 1 to 4 weeks for the AAFP and ISFM, every 1 to 2 for iCatCare. Skip it if the 30 days were the draw: by the guidelines, the box needs emptying sooner.
Corn litter
World’s Best Cat Litter Multiple Cat Unscented is whole-kernel corn pressed into clumping granules, plus an odor ingredient described only as a plant material used in animal feed. The maker lists it as 99% dust free and lightweight, says it lasts twice as long as the leading US brand, and asks for 2 to 3 in (5.1 to 7.6 cm).
Its usage table is the clearest weight figure here: an 8 lb bag lasts 38 days or more with one cat, or about 6.3 lb a month. Skip corn if you meant to switch from a non-clumping litter by mixing the two; the listing warns against that.
Wheat litter
The sWheat Scoop Multi-Cat page gives its ingredients as nothing but wheat, so the grain does the clumping, and the maker credits natural enzymes for odor. Its dust claim, 99.5% dust free, is the highest in the table. Unscented is not odorless, though: sWheat Scoop says the litter smells like a fresh wheat harvest.
It asks for a full 4 in (10 cm), topped up to stay there. The clumps are sold as flushable, yet the same page asks Californians not to flush any cat litter, citing state law AB 2485. Skip wheat if you want a box with no smell in a one-room home.
Grass seed litter
SmartCat All Natural Clumping Cat Litter is US-grown grass seed with no added fragrance, according to its maker’s page. It claims half the weight of traditional clay, lists 99% dust free, and describes a soft, sand-like texture, the nearest any natural maker here comes to the guidelines’ wording.
The maker admits the trade-off: litter this light tracks, so it suggests a rug by the box, shaken out daily, and our placement guide for small apartments shows spots with room for one. At 10 lb, it is the lightest clumping bag here after pidan’s. Skip it if loose grains on the floor bother you more than a heavy bag.
Paper litter
Fresh News is pelleted recycled paper with baking soda built in, and it does not clump. Fresh News claims 99% dust free and 100% non-allergenic, calls it three times as absorbent as clay, and sells 4, 12 and 25 lb bags.
Without clumps, urine stays in the pellets until the box is emptied, so San Diego Humane Society’s 2 to 3 day schedule for non-clumping litter applies. The paper in the 2025 cafe study was a clumping kind, and it still came last. Skip paper unless two or three full changes a week will really happen.
Tofu litter
The ingredient list for pidan Tofu Cat Litter shows tofu is only part of it: soy and pea pulp fiber, cassava, wheat and corn starches and flour, and a silica and calcium carbonate blend. pidan lists a 5.29 lb bag, an anti-dust formula with no percentage, fast clumping and flushability, and says one cat goes through about 2 bags a month.
The listing gives 24 liters for four bags, about 6 liters each, so pidan’s weight works out to 0.88 lb per liter (0.84 lb per quart). It also admits a large pee can leave a soft clump. Skip tofu for a cat that has only known fine sand: it is a pellet.
Weight: what each type asks you to carry
No maker here prints a bag’s volume beside its weight, so pidan’s 0.88 lb per liter, which leans on the listing, is the only density we can give. The makers offer comparisons and usage claims instead:
- Cat’s Pride: 25% lighter than traditional scoopable clay.
- SmartCat: half the weight of traditional clay.
- PetSafe crystals: up to 4.3 lb a month for one cat.
- World’s Best corn: about 6.3 lb a month.
- pidan tofu: two bags a month, or 10.6 lb.

Each maker measures lasting its own way and none shows its working; pidan’s figure is simply “based on our experience.” Depth moves the total more than brand does. Dr. Elsey’s asks for 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm), sWheat Scoop for 4, Naturally Fresh for 3. Cornell says most cats like litter about 1 to 2 in (2.5 to 5.1 cm) deep; the AAFP and ISFM minimum is roughly 1.25 in (3 cm). Pour 2 in (5.1 cm) instead of 4 and each full change takes half the litter.
For your own number, open the litter depth panel in the measuring tool: it takes your box’s length and width and returns liters per fill and per month, at a full change every 1 to 2 weeks. A month logged in the litter box cleaning tracker shows how many bags the stairs really cost. To price that month at your own bag size and price, try the cat litter calculator.

Whatever you pick, change over slowly. Cornell advises adding small amounts of the new litter to the old, and the AAFP and ISFM suggest letting the cat choose between boxes of different litters. Leave out deodorizing powder, which the same guidelines advise against.
Before you blame the litter. If your cat stops using the box after a change, put the old litter back. If it still goes elsewhere, see a vet before trying a third type, and call at once if it strains or cries in the box. Cornell lists urinary tract inflammation, kidney and thyroid disease and diabetes among the medical causes of house soiling, and warns that cats with medical conditions may not act sick.
How these litter types were chosen
Ten bags covering nine litter types were read, and each was set against the others on what it is made of, whether it clumps, the bag weight and the dust its maker claims. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra and Feline Pine Original dropped out because their listing weights contradicted their titles, and Fresh Step Clean Care Crystal because its listing says unscented while its maker says lightly scented. Dust figures are the makers’ own claims, and no page explains the method behind any of them.
Questions about types of cat litter
What type of cat litter is best for cats?
On the evidence, a fine, sand-like, unscented clumping litter: that is how the AAFP and ISFM, Cornell and iCatCare describe what most cats prefer. Clumping clay fits, and it was the most used material in the 2025 cafe study. A cat already using its box well needs no change at all.
What cat litter do vets recommend?
No veterinary body we read names a brand. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines, Cornell and iCatCare describe a kind of litter instead: unscented, clumping and fine like sand, which is what most cats choose, and the guidelines advise against scented litters and deodorizers. For a cat with a urinary or joint problem, ask your own vet.
What cat litter should you avoid?
Anything scented comes first, since the house-soiling guidelines say cats often find aromatic litter offensive. Be wary of coarse pellets for a cat raised on sand, and of non-clumping litter if you cannot empty the whole box every few days. Read natural litters’ labels too: one walnut range adds essential oils.
What are the three types of litter?
Stores usually sort litter into clumping, non-clumping and crystal. Clumping litter binds urine into lumps you lift out, non-clumping litter soaks it up until the box is changed, and silica crystals absorb it and get stirred. Of the natural litters here, corn, wheat, walnut, grass seed and tofu clump; paper and pine do not.
Is bentonite cat litter the same as clay litter?
Sometimes, so read the label. Dr. Elsey’s lists Clean Tracks as 100% bentonite clay, while Cat’s Pride calls its formula a dual-clay blend without naming the clays. Bentonite on a bag tells you which clay is inside. The word clumping tells you how it behaves in the box, and that is the part your cat notices.
Can you flush corn, wheat or tofu cat litter?
Their makers say so. World’s Best, sWheat Scoop and pidan all call their litters flushable, and World’s Best adds one or two clumps at a time, in well-maintained systems. Both World’s Best and sWheat Scoop note that California discourages flushing cat waste. In a rental, ask first: a blocked pipe becomes the landlord’s call.
How do I buy cat litter without a car?
Have it delivered, or size the bag to what you can carry: smaller bags of a lighter type such as grass seed or corn go home on foot or by bus. Then pour less. Cornell puts most cats’ preference at about 1 to 2 in (2.5 to 5.1 cm), while some makers here ask for 3 in (7.6 cm) or more.
Should I change cat litter when I move to a new apartment?
Not until the move is over. Pack a bag of the usual litter for the box in your cat’s first room at the new place, since nearly everything else there will be new. Switch later, and slowly, as Cornell advises: mix a little new litter into the old, then a bit more at each top-up.
Next step. Work out how much of your chosen litter a month takes, and what it costs, in the litter calculator.
