Buy a cat litter mat for the side your cat steps out of: at least as wide as that side of the box, and as deep as the floor you can give up. Then choose the material by how you will clean it. Without a washer or a balcony, that matters more than the pattern on top.
We read the makers’ own pages for five mats from four makers. None says how far litter rides on a cat’s paws, and neither does any veterinary source we read, so the sizing below starts with your tape measure.

Which cat litter mat to choose
Our pick for most small apartments: the Drymate Original XL. At 0.13 in (3 mm) it is slim, its maker says it can be cut to a custom size, and it takes a washer or a hose. A cramped bathroom, an odd gap beside a toilet and a building with no laundry room are all covered.

Key takeaways
- Run the mat’s long edge along the side your cat exits, no narrower than the box itself. → sizing the mat
- Check the gap under the shut bathroom door; Drymate’s 0.13 in (3 mm) is the only thickness any maker here publishes. → small bathrooms
- No laundry room? Choose a mat you can rinse in the tub or shower; a machine-only mat means the laundromat. → washing it
- Urine on the mat or elsewhere outside the box means a vet checkup before you change anything. → the vet note

Only Drymate publishes a thickness, the figure that matters when a mat lies under the swing of a bathroom door.
Buying the box too? The cat measuring tool works out its length from one measurement of your cat, and the space-fit planner checks that box and mat both fit the spot.
Sizing a litter box mat to the exit and the floor
Start at the opening: the door of a hooded box, or the side of an open one that faces the room. Lay the mat’s long edge along it, at least as wide as the box, so a cat that hops out at an angle still lands on the mat.

Box depth plus mat depth is the clear floor you need out from the wall. With the diagram’s covered box against a wall, door facing out, the 17 in (43 cm) Gorilla Grip Small makes 32.25 in (82 cm), and the Drymate’s 29 in (74 cm) side makes 44.25 in (112 cm).
Under the box or in front? That box set on the 24 x 17 in (61 x 43 cm) Small leaves 1.75 in (4.4 cm) of mat in front, less than a paw, so mats under 30 in (76 cm) long belong in front. Vacqueen’s listing pitches its 47 x 37 in (119 x 94 cm) mat for under and around a box.
The same listing says one mat holds two or three boxes. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines object: cats read boxes standing side by side as one big box, and close neighbors should open at right angles. Put the second box elsewhere; our placement guide for small apartments finds the spot.
A small litter mat for a bathroom or closet
Before you order, close the bathroom door and measure the gap under it. Drymate’s 0.13 in (3.3 mm) is the only published thickness here, so keep any other mat outside the door’s swing until you can measure it. Only Drymate says its mat can be cut, which turns the sheet into, say, a 20 in (51 cm) strip beside a toilet.
Water is the other bathroom problem. Gorilla Grip warns that its mesh and honeycomb mats are not slip-resistant, asks you to wipe up water on or under them and to stop using one whose edges curl. Beside a tub, that trip risk is yours, not the cat’s. A box in a corner gets the mesh mat’s corner shape, 32 x 32 x 45 in (81 x 81 x 114 cm) by Gorilla Grip’s specifications but 35 x 32 x 45 in (89 x 81 x 114 cm) in its size menu; in a closet with the door hooked open, the mat goes just outside the threshold.
Drymate Original XL: thin enough for the bathroom door
Drymate makes this mat in the USA from fabric with at least 50% recycled fiber (non-woven polyester, by the listing) on a waterproof, slip-resistant backing. It claims the fabric holds up to four times its weight in liquid and dries quickly because it is thin.
Cleaning is why it wins without a laundry room: Drymate allows a machine wash, alone and hung to dry, or a hose-down with mild detergent, and a shower head can play the hose. The listing’s cleaning steps start with a vacuum or with pouring the litter off. Skip fabric for a cat that has ever used a rug or a laundry pile as a toilet: Cornell notes that cats drawn to soft surfaces such as carpets or clothing usually stick with that choice.
Gorilla Grip Mesh: eight shapes, from 17 x 11 in (43 x 28 cm) up
No mat here comes in more sizes: 17 x 11, 24 x 17, 30 x 20, 35 x 23, 40 x 28 and 47 x 35 in (43 x 28 cm up to 119 x 89 cm), a 30 x 20 in (76 x 51 cm) half circle and the corner shape, weighing 1 lb (0.45 kg) for the Small up to 4.2 lb (1.9 kg) for the Jumbo. The Small sits in front of one standard box; under the diagram’s box, the 35 x 23 in (89 x 58 cm) Large leaves 7.75 in (20 cm) of mat in front.
By the maker’s account, the thick coils and deep grooves hold litter until you tip it back into the box. It washes by hand only, with mild detergent, then air dries. One line says the textured backing “helps it to stay in place”; the warning below it says the mat is not slip-resistant.

Three of the first four mats in the Amazon results we pulled on Oct 17, 2026 were double-layer honeycomb designs, with no maker’s page we could find. Gorilla Grip’s has one: litter falls through large holes into a bottom layer the maker calls leakproof, and you tip the mat to pour it back. Its listing gives the material as EVA.
Gorilla Grip now sells 24 x 15 and 30 x 24 in (61 x 38 and 76 x 61 cm), and Amazon only the 24 x 15 in (61 x 38 cm) mat, so skip it for a box wider than 24 in (61 cm). Flatten any crease under a book for at least 24 hours, as the maker suggests, and rinse it with soap and water.
CatGuru Heavy Duty: the one maker that names crystal litter
CatGuru sells Medium, 24 x 20 in (61 x 51 cm), Extra-Large, 36 x 28 in (91 x 71 cm), and XXL, 48 x 35 in (122 x 89 cm). By the maker’s figure, its 3D fabric top traps 99% of spilled litter; the page does not say how that was measured. The backing is waterproof and non-slip. No other maker here says its mat works with every litter type, crystal included.
The care steps are the catch: fold, shake into the box or a bin, take it outside for a firmer shake if needed, machine wash. Up four flights of stairs, outside is a trip, so this one suits a building with a washer and crystal litter in the box.
Vacqueen Extra Large: a large litter box mat you rinse in the tub
At 47 x 37 in (119 x 94 cm), or 12.1 sq ft (1.1 m²), the Vacqueen Extra Large covers the most floor here, and its 4.95 lb (2.25 kg) is the heaviest published weight. Its one-piece silicone has a honeycomb texture that Vacqueen says stays put on hardwood, tile and carpet; shake, vacuum, wipe or rinse it, and roll it up for storage.
The listing adds a raised border and a pour spout, and steers crystal and silica gel users elsewhere. Smaller 40 x 28 and 34 x 22 in (102 x 71 and 86 x 56 cm) sizes appear on Vacqueen’s chart. Skip the big one unless you have measured 12 sq ft (1.1 m²) of free floor.
Washing a litter mat without a laundry room
Empty the mat each time you scoop, which the AAFP and ISFM want at least once a day. Clean, loose litter can go back in the box, as most of these makers suggest; clumps go in the trash. Wash the mat when you wash the box: for clumping litter the guidelines overlap at every 1 to 2 weeks (AAFP and ISFM 1 to 4, International Cat Care 1 to 2), and the litter box cleaning tracker keeps the dates.

By material:
- Silicone, mesh and honeycomb (Vacqueen and both Gorilla Grip mats): rinse in the tub or shower, with mild soap for the Gorilla Grip pair.
- Drymate: mild detergent under the shower head, which stands in for the maker’s hose.
- CatGuru: machine only, so the laundry room or a laundromat.
Drymate wants its machine wash done alone, a whole coin-op cycle for one mat. Dry mats over the tub edge or shower rod, and never shake one off a balcony or out of a window: the grit lands on the unit below.
Keep strong cleaners off the mat. Drymate says not to bleach its mat. The AAFP and ISFM warn that ammonia-based cleaners smell like urine to a cat, and Cornell adds vinegar for soiled carpet. Rinse out every trace of soap, and keep the bottles in a closed cabinet rather than on the floor by the litter.
Rugs, rental floors and the backing underneath
Drymate, CatGuru and Vacqueen call their mats waterproof; Gorilla Grip calls the honeycomb’s bottom layer leakproof. That guards a wood or vinyl plank floor only where the mat lies, so lift it on box-washing day, dry underneath and check the boards. Cheap deposit insurance.
Grip is where the makers disagree. Drymate describes a slip-resistant backing and Vacqueen names carpet among the surfaces it holds, while Gorilla Grip says neither of its mats is slip-resistant and rules out concrete for the mesh one. On a rug, a mat that slides rucks up, so pick a named grip or roll the rug away.
A cat that pees on the mat needs a vet first. If your cat starts going on the mat or just outside the box, book a checkup before changing anything. Cornell lists urinary tract inflammation, kidney and thyroid disease, diabetes and age-related trouble getting around among the causes. Straining with little or no urine, almost always in a male, needs a vet right away.
Why a mat beats new litter, a hood or a top-entry box
Most makers say nothing about litter. CatGuru names every type, Vacqueen’s listing steers crystal users away, and nobody mentions the pine or paper pellets in our types of cat litter compared, so we cannot rank these mats by litter.

Do not change litter to cut tracking, either. The AAFP and ISFM list “less tracking” among label phrases aimed at people rather than cats, and ask for fine, unscented, clumping litter. Hoods and top-entry boxes are sold against scatter too, but open boxes remain the AAFP and ISFM recommendation, since waste is easier to see and scoop, and International Cat Care advises against top-entering trays. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior points to earlier research in which hooded boxes went about five days between cleanings. A mat leaves the inside of the box alone. Our litter box sizes and styles page covers the rest.
How these mats were chosen
Only mats with a maker page that prints sizes made the cut, leaving five mats from four makers read on Oct 17, 2026. Each was compared on width against the side your cat exits, thickness under a bathroom door, material and how it washes without a laundry room. Pieviev’s honeycomb mat went because we found no maker page for it, Polarduck because Conlun, which sells it, does not list it, and Lovewag’s page covers a general pet mat. Only Drymate gives a thickness, and no maker or vet source says how far litter rides on paws.
Questions about litter mats
What is the best kind of litter mat?
In a small apartment, the best kind is the one you will clean on schedule in the space you have. A thin fabric mat on a waterproof backing, like the Drymate Original XL, suits a cramped bathroom without a washer. If vacuuming is the chore you skip, pick a mat you tip back into the box.
Can I wash a litter box or mat with dish soap?
A little mild soap is fine by most sources, though they split. AAHA prefers plain hot water for the box, the AAFP and ISFM allow soap with hot water, and Cornell suggests a gentle detergent. For a mat, follow its maker: Gorilla Grip and Drymate both name mild detergent. Rinse until no scent remains.
Will a litter mat fit under my bathroom door?
Only if the mat is thinner than the gap, and Drymate is the one maker here that prints a thickness: 0.13 in (3 mm). Shut the door and measure the gap at its lowest point first. When it is tight, or the mat’s thickness is unknown, put the mat beyond the door’s arc and keep the receipt.
How do I clean a litter mat with no washer or balcony?
Tip the loose litter into the trash or back into the box, then rinse the mat in the tub or shower; Gorilla Grip, Vacqueen and Drymate all describe hand cleaning with water. Drape it over the tub to dry. Keep it off the balcony, where one good shake rains litter on the neighbors.
Next step. Check the box and mat fit your spot together in the space-fit planner.
