For litter disposal in an apartment, a sealed pail such as a Litter Genie keeps scooped clumps in a film bag for up to 14 days for one cat in most models, by its maker’s figures. That turns a daily trip to the building trash into about two a month. Using a plant or paper litter? Our guide to eco-friendly cat litters covers where the used litter should go.

Which bin suits a small home depends on three numbers: the floor it takes beside the box, the days one bag holds and the months a refill lasts. We read the makers’ pages for seven bins on Oct 17, 2026. None publishes an odor test, and this site tests nothing itself, so smell is not ranked here.

Which cat litter disposal system to choose

Our pick for one cat: the Litter Genie Standard with a Jumbo Refill. Its 14 days per bag lead the one-cat pails in the table below, and the maker lists it among the pails that take the 28 ft (8.5 m) Jumbo, rated at up to 4 months. That is about two trash trips a month and three refills a year. Amazon had it in stock on Oct 17, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Days per bag are makers’ estimates that do not track bin size; treat them as a ceiling. → the bins compared
  • Set the pail on the side you scoop from, clear of the entry, so the box keeps its escape route. → where the bin goes
  • Look at clumps before they vanish into the sealed bag; a cat straining to pass little or no urine needs a vet at once. → the vet note
  • In a studio, the box rather than the bin makes most of the smell, so daily scooping and full changes beat any lid. → odor in a studio

Figures are the makers’ unless marked “listing”, meaning only the Amazon listing gives them. Trips a month are our arithmetic: 30 days divided by the days one bag holds.

Treat the days as a ceiling. They are estimates, and they do not follow size: Neakasa prints 9.2 L and promises 10 days, while the Standard’s listing gives 7 liters and its maker promises 14 days. Nobody prints the height with the lid open, the number that decides whether a pail fits under a vanity.

Where a disposal bin fits beside the litter box

Put the bin beside the box on your scooping side, never across the entry. Cornell, the AAHA and AAFP and the AAFP and ISFM guidelines want a calm, private litter spot the cat can reach day and night, with an escape route. A pail in that escape route makes the box a dead end. Leave the entry side to a litter mat instead.

A tape measure checks the floor gap between a toilet base and the wall before buying a bin.

In a bathroom the slot is usually beside the toilet. Measure at floor level, because the toilet base and the baseboard eat width a tape at knee height misses. Neakasa needs 7.2 in (18 cm), the simplehuman can 7.6 in (19 cm) and the Standard 8.5 in (22 cm) by their listings, and the Platinum and Ubbi 8.5 in (22 cm).

A single cat still gets two boxes, in two places, under the AAHA and AAFP count of one per cat plus one. One pail can serve both if they share a room. Otherwise keep small bags by the far box and empty them into the pail as you pass. Our small-apartment placement guide weighs each spot.

Capacity against trips to the building trash

Scooping sets the pace: at least once a day for the AAFP and ISFM and Cornell, twice if you can for iCatCare. Carry each scoop out and that is 30 to 60 trips a month. A 14-day pail cuts it to about 2.

A knotted bag of used litter goes into a bin in the building trash room.

The scoop is the health check. Once clumps drop into a sealed bag, nobody sees them again, so look as you scoop. A cat that strains and passes little or no urine needs a vet right away: Cornell calls a blocked urethra an absolute emergency, males are most at risk, and iCatCare warns that owners can mistake it for constipation.

On a fourth-floor walk-up, those saved trips are the point. The XL+ goes longest, 21 days for one cat, and the maker’s support page says it holds 50% more than the Standard or Plus; Amazon.com was selling it directly on Oct 26, 2026. No maker here prints days for two cats; halving the one-cat figure is our rough guide, not theirs, and the two-cat box guide covers where their boxes go.

The full change never fits. The AAFP and ISFM allow 1 to 4 weeks between emptying and washing the box; iCatCare says 1 to 2. A 24 x 18 in box (61 x 46 cm) filled 2 in (5.1 cm) deep, the top of Cornell’s range, holds about 14 liters by our arithmetic, half again Neakasa’s 9.2 L. Bag it and take it down that day; the wash that follows is in our litter box cleaning how-to. The cat measuring tool gives your box’s liters, and the lightweight litter guide turns them into pounds.

Chutes follow building rules: read the sign at the chute or ask the manager what may go down and how to bag it. If a chute on your own floor makes each trip trivial, a lidded can is enough, and our litter box smell guide argues for small bags out with the daily trash.

This guide does not cover flushing used litter or composting it. Before trying either, ask your building manager and check your city’s rules.

Litter Genie refill and bag counts for a year

Pails are bought once; refills are the running cost. Prices change too often to print, so multiply the checkout price by the yearly count below.

Neakasa PooGuard refills3 rolls of 16 bagsAbout 10 days a bagAbout 37 bagsPooGuard only
Refill sizes and durations from each maker’s page, read Oct 17, 2026.

Two formats, two trade-offs. Easy Roll bags hold only 8 days, yet one refill lasts 6 months and, by the maker’s sums, equals three Standard cartridges. A Standard pail holds 14 days but uses up a 14 ft (4.3 m) cartridge in 2 months, so pair it with the Jumbo, which the maker says lasts twice as long on 35% less cartridge plastic.

Spent cartridges are not recyclable in standard city programs, the maker says; its Genuine Film bags, 25% post-consumer recycled plastic, reload an empty Standard or Jumbo cartridge. Third-party cartridges are left out. Before ordering, read the name on your lid: the Jumbo fits the XL+ but not the older XL. The maker calls its Jumbo Eco film compostable; that describes the bag, not the litter in it.

Litter Genie pails: Standard, XL+, Easy Roll and Platinum

Every pail in the line works alike: open the lid, drop the clumps, pull the handle, and a sliding lever closes the bag off. The maker credits a multi-layer film with “odor-locking barrier technology.” Square pails take continuous film you cut and knot to length; the Easy Roll and Platinum take pre-cut bags in an opaque blue film that hides what is inside.

A scoop, a holder and a starter refill rated at up to 1.5 months come with the Standard. Plus, Style, Design and Essential pails hold the same 14 days. On the Design, the maker contradicts itself: its home page says 98% recycled plastic, its product page says virgin resin.

The Easy Roll, made in the USA, and the stainless steel Platinum hold 8 days. That suits a weekly trash run and two refill orders a year, and costs about four trips a month on a walk-up.

Neakasa PooGuard XL: the narrowest base

Neakasa’s bin has the smallest footprint here and the only volume printed by a sealed-pail maker, 9.2 L. A side window shows the fill level, and the inner bin is washable.

Its maker lists three odor barriers: a sealed lid, a flap inside it and 7-layer EVOH bags, which it says block ammonia and hydrogen sulfide better than ordinary trash bags. It also claims an opening 80% wider than standard bins, naming no bins. A wide slot matters when you scoop one-handed in a tight corner, since a clump that misses becomes grit underfoot.

The bags fit this bin only, and on Oct 17, 2026 Neakasa’s own store had the bin and refills sold out while Amazon had the Neakasa PooGuard XL in stock. Buy spare rolls with it.

Ubbi Pet Waste Pail: any kitchen trash bag

Ubbi’s pail is powder-coated steel with a rubber gasket that Ubbi says locks odors in, a lid that locks when the handle twists and a non-skid rubber base. Any standard kitchen trash bag fits. No refill system to run out of.

Ubbi prints no capacity. The Ubbi Pet Waste Pail listing gives 13 gallons, but a box the pail’s outside size, 8.5 x 10 x 17.75 in (22 x 25 x 45 cm), holds about 6.5 gallons, so we count it as unpublished. Skip it if you need days per bag before buying.

A cat litter trash can with a lid, or a sealed pail?

The kitchen-style answer is a small step can such as the simplehuman 4.5 L Round Step Can. Simplehuman lists 4.5 L, a steel pedal engineered for over 150,000 steps, a slow-closing lid it calls Lid Shox, a removable inner bucket and Code A liners.

Simplehuman makes no odor claim for it, and that is the difference. A step lid covers the clumps; the sealed pails add a barrier in the bag or a gasket in the can. Choose the step can if trash goes out daily anyway, since it is the lowest bin here and the pedal leaves your scoop hand free.

Odor in a one-room home

In a studio the box shares air with the bed, and the box, not the bin, is most of the smell: daily scooping and a regular full change do more than any lid (see keeping a litter box from smelling and odor-control litters). Change the bag once you can smell it with the lid closed.

In a studio, hands lift a knotted bag out of the litter pail a few feet from the bed.

Do not perfume the pail. Essential oils on the lid or a diffuser by the box are a hazard, not a fix. The Merck Veterinary Manual explains that cats are short of an enzyme, glucuronyl transferase, needed for the phenolic compounds in some oils, and that diffuser droplets settle on fur and get licked off.

How these bins were chosen

Seven bins were checked against their makers’ own figures on Oct 17, 2026, each compared on its footprint beside the box, how many days a single bag lasts and how long one refill runs. Litter Champ dropped out because no maker page turned up and search results called it discontinued. The Glad step can went for the same missing page, and compatible cartridges from RUNDE and DANMBAQU were left out as third-party products we did not research. No maker prints an odor test, a lid-open height or days for two cats, so smell goes unranked.

Questions about litter disposal bins

Does the Litter Genie really work?

It does what its maker describes: clumps go into a film bag, a lever closes it off, and a Standard bag takes up to two weeks of one cat’s waste. No maker here publishes a test of how well it holds smell against a lidded can, and this site runs no tests, so we give no verdict.

What is the difference between the Litter Genie Standard and Plus?

They hold the same, up to 14 days for one cat, and share square cartridges. The Plus adds an antimicrobial its maker says inhibits odors caused by bacteria, ships with a starter refill rated at up to 2.5 months instead of 1.5, and comes in black or silver.

Can you use regular garbage bags in a Litter Genie?

Not on any page we read. The maker describes only its own refills and says genuine ones fit without gaps that could leak. To cut plastic it sells film for reloading an empty cartridge, not a way to use any bag. If ordinary kitchen bags matter most, Ubbi’s steel pail is built around them.

Can litter from the pail go down my building’s trash chute?

That is the building’s call, not the pail maker’s. Check the notice by the chute door or ask the super, and tie each bag shut before it leaves the apartment. If litter may not go down, a pail that holds two or three weeks saves most of the walks to the trash room.

Which refill means the fewest orders if I don’t have a car?

The Easy Roll refill: its maker rates one at up to 6 months for one cat, so two a year will do. For square pails, the Jumbo comes next at up to 4 months, and its 2-pack comes in a box the listing gives as 7 x 7 x 6 in (18 x 18 x 15 cm), small enough to carry home on foot.

Next step. Draw the pail beside the box in the space-fit planner and check the scooping side stays clear.
